BMW started importing vehicles to the USA in 1975 and quickly became known for their sporty little cars. Over the years they expanded their lineup and some would argue they lost their roots to accommodate an expanding large luxury car and SUV market. Thankfully with all the money they make selling those cars in the masses, we’re able to be graced with cars like the M2 competition package which is a true work of art from Bavaria.
I was very excited to get my hands on the M2, knowing I would test it out by running it up the coast of northern California. Some have said it’s BMWs best sports car in a decade and I’m not one to disagree after my little trip. With a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-6 Cylinder that delivers 405 horsepower and redlines at 7,600 rpms, it adds an extra punch of power with two turbochargers. The result is a screaming symphony of metal in motion that gets from 0-60 in just 4.2 seconds. It’s not just a string line car either, with an incredibly responsive suspension and old fashion heavy precise BMW racing steering which I fell in love with.
The M2 takes customizable vehicle settings to a whole new level. Boasting independent engine, transmission and steering settings; all of which have three modes which range from comfort/economy to supersport. It’s truly incredible how the M2 can go from an efficient freeway runner to a track car with the press of a few buttons. BMW also added a few customizable M buttons on the steering wheel which allows you to preset all of your custom settings and quickly switch between them.
SLICK M INTERIOR
When you check out the M2 on the inside, the first thing you’ll notice are the bold M racing seats which are a combination of leather and Alcantara and include LED-lit M logos. They even have adjustable side bolsters ensuring you’ll stay snug in your seat on the track. The rest of the interior is a combination of carbon-fiber like trim and soft plastic surfaces. Although, my personal favorite interior design feature is the classic BMW three-spoke M steering wheel. It features incredibly soft leather and is the perfect size in both diameter and thickness; plus it features the legendary three color M stitching pattern, a nice touch indeed.
THE BEST BMW PERFORMANCE CAR
The M2 has an astonishing powertrain which is not only efficient but incredibly powerful when you want it to be. BMW coupled that with incredible driving dynamics and bold styling which makes for a next-level driving experience. It can go up against anything from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche which is really saying something. The 2019 BMW M2 will no doubt go down in history as one of the best M cars ever made.
